La foresta Aokigahara, chiamata anche Jukai - La foresta dei suicidi, è un groviglio silenzioso di alberi e arbusti situato ai piedi del monte Fuji, in Giappone. La giovane Sara (Natalie Dormer) vi si inoltra per ritrovare la gemella Jess che tutti credono morta. La ragazza è svanita in circostanze misteriose durante un campeggio solitario, proprio nel luogo in cui si recano le persone intenzionate a togliersi la vita. Ma questo non basta a convincere Sara che Jess sia morta nella foresta degli orrori, così vola dall'altra parte del pianeta per rintracciarla. Lo spettacolo che le si presenta davanti ricorda lo scenario di un suo incubo ricorrente: il fitto ammasso di vegetazione racchiude oscuri misteri incomprensibili all'uomo, al di là dei sentieri battuti si consumano orrende visioni di paura, strazio e dolore, creature demoniache si nascondono nelle grotte gelate e nei fossi coperti. Chiunque vorrebbe fuggire da quel luogo selvaggio e labirintico, teatro di morte e sofferenza. Ma non l'ostinata Sara, almeno non prima di aver ritrovato sua sorella.
